The fire department began the rescue immediately, but the child died on the way to the hospital, the Gelsenkirchen police said.
Many relatives on site
The child has Romanian citizenship and lived in the immediate vicinity of the accident site. According to the police, many relatives gathered there in the afternoon. “They mourn differently than we Germans do. We try to let them do this with all due respect,” said a police spokesman. The situation was calm.
Police are looking for witnesses
According to the police, a total of 37 emergency services from the professional fire brigade, volunteer fire brigade and the rescue service were on site. Kurt-Schumacher-Straße was completely closed for several hours during the measures.
Specialists from the Bochum police were also on site to secure evidence.
