Emergency warning! Solar flares of magnitude M or even magnitude X may erupt in the next three days. What does magnitude X mean?
Kuai Technology reported on May 5 that the National Space Weather Monitoring and Warning Center issued a solar flare information reminder: At 14:01 on May 5, 2024, Beijing time, the sun erupted with a strong flare (X1.3 magnitude).
It was daytime in my country when the incident occurred, and the flare had an impact on the ionosphere above my country. It is expected that M-level or even X-level flares may still erupt in the next three days.
It is expected that ionospheric weather disturbances may occur in parts of China in the next three days.
Solar flare is an important manifestation of solar activity. It is a sudden and large-scale energy release process in a local area of the sun’s surface, causing instantaneous heating of the local area, emitting various electromagnetic radiation outwards, and accompanied by a sudden increase in particle radiation. The wavelengths of light emitted span the entire electromagnetic spectrum.
The duration of a flare is within a few minutes to tens of minutes. In this short period of time, it can release approximately the same energy as the simultaneous explosion of tens of billions of giant hydrogen bombs, or the equivalent of one hundred thousand to one million powerful volcanic eruptions. The total amount of energy released shows how powerful it is. However, for the huge energy source of the sun, it only accounts for about one ten thousandth of the total energy of solar radiation.
Generally speaking, there are five levels of flares: A, B, C, M and X, and the energy released increases in sequence. Flares below C level are small flares; M-level flares are medium flares; X-level flares are large flares.
It is understood that solar flares will affect the earth’s ionosphere on the sunny side. Shortwave communications, navigation and positioning, maritime search and rescue, and some emergency communications are all closely related to the state of the ionosphere. This type of disaster is gradually becoming more prominent with the advancement of human space technology, especially affecting and harming the safety of satellites and spacecraft, as well as aviation, communications, navigation and other fields.
