Energy transition at a snail’s pace

This is where I want to draw attention, it is not clear why there is so much difficulty for the projects to advance at full steam as required, if it is a Government policy. It is no secret to anyone that the projects assigned in the 2019 and 2021 auctions for the start-up of the wind farms in La Guajira are still pending, when it was expected that they would begin their entry to oxygenate and deactivate the pressure and stress that today the entire national energy system lives.

The current crisis that the energy sector is experiencing due to lack of timely decisions cannot become a repetitive event that puts the energy supply at stake as has been happening in recent weeks in some regions of Colombia. And although our matrix is mostly clean, since we generate 70% from water, it is subject to the effects of natural phenomena, such as those experienced by the “El Niño” phenomenon in which the absence of rain has influenced the level of the reservoirs with which energy is generated.

In that sense, I want to make a responsible call to the Government to act now and unblock what is happening with renewable energy projects in the country, the emergency of these weeks is a warning about what can happen if the measures are not taken. measures in time to confront it and move from discourse to the execution of these initiatives.

This year has been hard, we will go from the El Niño to the La Niña Phenomenon, but the year 2025 is going to have greater challenges and the shadow of a possible blackout grows. If the national and local governments do not prepare, the blackout will be more than imminent and rates will increase even further.

I close by remembering the importance of the appointment of the CREG commissioners. It is essential for making the necessary technical decisions to face the energy crisis and the unpayable costs of its tariffs. You cannot improvise when the country is on the brink of the worst energy emergency in recent times.
