Etna does not stop, new eruption with lava fountains

by admin

Third paroxysmal phase on Etna from the night between 18 and 19 May, when the “lava fountain of Franco Battiato” was recorded. The new activity is present once again from the South-East crater with spectacular lava fountains and ash emission that disperses in an East-North-East direction.

The eruption is monitored by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology-Etneo Observatory (Ingv-Oe) of Catania and resumed at about 20.30 with Strombolian activity.

Volcanic tremor is further increasing to very high values. The sources of the tremor are located near the South-East crater at a depth of about 2.8 kilometers above sea level. The occurrence rate of infrasonic events is very high. The clinometric network shows modest variations around 0.1 microradians. The Gnss network does not show variations. The new eruptive phase of the highest active volcano in Europe does not currently impact the operations of the Vincenzo Bellini international airport in Catania.
