EU foreign policy chief presents plan for two-state solution

Brussels (epd). EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said he has presented EU member states with a comprehensive plan to revive the Middle East peace process. The plan aims for a two-state solution. The internal discussions about this had been successful, said Borrell on Monday after a meeting with the EU foreign ministers in Brussels.

It is clear that the current urgency is to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Gaza, to stop the bombing and to free the hostages. “But that shouldn’t stop us from working on a peace conference in the long and medium term and starting to plan it now,” said Borrell. The cycle of violence must finally be stopped. The peace plan presented is an important step in this direction.

Top diplomats from Egypt, Jordan, Saudi Arabia and the Secretary General of the Arab League also arrived in Brussels on Monday for discussions about possible initiatives for lasting peace. The foreign ministers of Israel and the Palestinian Authority also spoke separately to the EU ministers.
