Exhibition about sexual minorities under National Socialism

Fürstenberg an der Havel (epd). From February 10th, the Ravensbrück Memorial in Fürstenberg an der Havel will show an exhibition about the persecution of sexual minorities during the National Socialist era. The diverse and ambivalent life stories of queer people will be traced using documents, graphics, photographs and quotes, the Brandenburg Memorials Foundation announced on Friday in Oranienburg. Previously unpublished material would also be shown. The term “queer” is now used as a self-description by and for people who define themselves as homosexual, bisexual, transsexual or intersexual, among other things.

The exhibition by the Magnus Hirschfeld Federal Foundation offers a broad overview, deeper insights into individual biographies and current research results, it said. It illustrates how the lives of many queer people were broken and destroyed by the National Socialists. At the same time, the exhibition sheds light on how remaining room for maneuver was used in everyday life. Not only stories of persecution are described, but also ways of self-assertion for queer people in a threatening reality. The exhibition “Living at Risk. Queer People 1933-1945” will be on view until March 24th.
