El Salvador’s exports of goods and services fell 8.7% in 2023, according to data on foreign trade from the Central Reserve Bank (BCR).

El Salvador registered a total of $6,498.11 million in exports between January and December of last year, 8.7% less than those reported in the 12 months of 2022, when they reached $7,115.11 million dollars.

The United States is the main buyer of Salvadoran goods and services, followed by Guatemala and Honduras.

El Salvador mainly exports agricultural, livestock and textile products.

Exports in December 2023 were below the records of that same month in the previous three years, which is “worrying,” said economist Carlos Acevedo, former president of the Central Reserve Bank (BCR), on Tuesday.

According to BCR data, the export figure in December of last year was 449.11 million dollars, 6% less than the amount registered in the same month of 2022, when they totaled 477.90 million.

In December 2021, the figure closed at 510.33 million dollars and in 2020 it was 454.02 million, according to official statistics on foreign trade.

For Acevedo, this behavior in exports is “worrying,” as he said in an interview on a television channel in which he also noted that the record for December of last year “almost reaches the level” of December 2019, when a income of 448.51 million dollars.
