Prime Minister Manuela Schwesig (SPD) presented the awards on Saturday in Schwerin. The Federal Order of Merit recognizes special achievements in political, economic, cultural, intellectual or voluntary areas.

The Prime Minister presented the awards on behalf of Federal President Steinmeier. She emphasized that today’s challenges, such as climate change, can only be overcome together.

These people from MV were honored

The winners are examples of good coexistence in society, said Schwesig. And Peter Grosch from Schwerin is one of them. He received the Order of Merit for, among other things, his commitment to addiction help. Grosch founded the first self-help group for addicts during the GDR era and later set up a network of working groups for alcohol addicts in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.

Awards for volunteer work in various social areas

Jutta Hastädt from Karrenzin was honored for her voluntary work for children and young people. Hastädt has been active for the German Red Cross for over 50 years and trains young people in first aid. She heads the Youth Red Cross in the DRK district association Parchim eV

Deacon Christophorus Baumert from Dömitz was also honored for his social commitment in the church community and beyond. He supports young people, the unemployed, the homeless and refugees and worked as a police and emergency chaplain for many years.

Klaus-Peter Glimm from Greifswald has been committed to social professions for decades and received the Federal Order of Merit for this. After the fall of the Wall, he was committed, among other things, to the recognition and equality of social professional qualifications in the GDR.

Barbara Niehaus from Hohenfelde near Bad Doberan, however, was honored for her social commitment at the “Soup Kitchen Meeting Point”. She co-founded the meeting point in 2008 and has been running it on a voluntary basis ever since.

Cultural commitment and commitment to democracy

Kati Mattutat from Greifswald was honored for her cultural commitment to the Vorpommern Literature Center. Mattutat supports artists throughout Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Dr. Daniel Trepsdorf from Schwerin, however, received the Federal Order of Merit for his commitment to democracy and human rights. The left-wing politician is involved in the Schwerin city council and heads the West Mecklenburg Democracy Center.

Honoring medical research achievements

Prof. Dr. Thomas Mettenleiter from Mesekenhagen was honored for his work in the field of animal disease research. He headed the Friedrich Löffler Institute on the Riems for 27 years and has received many awards for his work.

The Zinnowitz Dr. Matthias Gründling was honored for his research on sepsis at the University Medical Center Greifswald. Thanks to his research, the sepsis death rate at the university hospital is ten percent below the national average.
