More than 20,000 guests are expected at the Emden-Norderney film festival. Actor Moritz Bleibtreu will also be there – he will receive the Emden Acting Prize.

The 33rd edition of the Emden-Norderney International Film Festival opened on Wednesday evening with the French feature film “Divertimento – An Orchestra for All” by Marie-Castille Mention-Schar. The German premiere marks the start of the public festival, to which the organizers are expecting around 20,000 cinema fans in Emden and on Norderney. The Emden-Norderney International Film Festival was founded in 1990 as an initiative of the Emden Film Club. In the meantime, the festival has developed into a nationally and internationally acclaimed public festival. Thanks to many sponsors, the festival can award prize money of 65,500 euros in eleven prize categories.

The film festival has a new festival management

After 33 years, Rolf Eckard, as the founder and long-time director of the festival, is retiring from the Emden-Norderney Film Festival. Last year, the film festival supervisory board appointed Edzard Wagenaar as his successor, who will take over the management of the festival together with Nora Dreyer as managing director from this year on. Edzard Wagenaar already has many years of film festival experience as a section leader in the field of short film, in the event area and as a moderator.

13 German premieres will be shown

The Emden-Norderney Film Festival has now developed into a nationally and internationally acclaimed public festival. In addition to brand new German films, numerous productions from Northwest Europe are once again the focus of the festival programme. Many of them will be presented in Emden and on Norderney as world premieres or German premieres. So also this year. With a total of 49 feature films and 18 short films, including six world premieres and 13 German premieres, the public festival in the north-west once again underscores its claim to present brand new and highly topical international film productions.

Moritz Bleibtreu receives the Emden Acting Prize

At the 33rd International Film Festival Emden-Norderney, Moritz Bleibtreu receives the Emden Acting Prize. The renowned award for outstanding acting achievements will be presented to the actor on Sunday at the awards ceremony in the Johannes a Lasco Library in Emden. With cinema successes such as “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door” or “Soul Kitchen”, but also with various TV roles, the native of Munich has made a name for himself as one of the outstanding German actors. “The Emden-Norderney International Film Festival is delighted to be able to honor an artist in Moritz Bleibtreu who, over a long period of time, has continuously developed an almost legendary reputation with outstanding acting performances and who inspires his audience,” says Nora Dreyer, Managing Director of the International Film Festival Emden-Norderney.

In addition to prize money of 5,000 euros, the award also includes a cinematic homage, with six films starring Moritz Bleibtreu being shown in the festival programme. The prize is donated by the Emden DIRKS GROUP.
