Five years after graduation, the highest salaries for doctors and engineers: an average of € 633 less for women

UDINE. “How do you imagine five years from now?” This is the question that all recent graduates expect at job interviews. The right answer in theory is not there, but those who do the interview usually have one in their head. Those who “suffer” as well: everyone’s hope is to make a quick career, but this hardly happens to graduates from Udine.

The testimony of all this emerges from the latest Almalaurea data on the University of Udine freely available (refer to 2020), which consider what happened to the master’s graduates at the Friulian university five years earlier.

THE NUMBERS

The average salaries of graduates in Udine considered by discipline and disaggregated by gender tell of a not serene scenario for graduates from the Friulian university, a scenario that, moreover, traces gender stereotypes.

«They are a bit ‘dirty’: the sample is not accidental. Despite the background noise, however, they can tell a story, ”says Laura Pagani, associate professor of statistics at the university. This is a story that speaks strongly of our territory, given that the vast majority of graduates from the Friulian university – as much as 86.7 percent – find work in the Northeast, therefore in the area.

THE BEST AND WORST SALARY

If we look at the picture of average salaries, an already known “cross-section” emerges: degrees in science or technology are the ones with which one makes a career. In fact, the highest net average salaries are seen with degrees in medicine and surgery (€ 2,086), engineering (€ 1,846) and economics (€ 1,615). Most of the graduates at the University of Udine have studied one of these disciplines.

Graduates in art and design (1,251 euros) are in last place on an equal footing with graduates in motor science. In the penultimate position letters (1,289 euros), and just above languages (1,379 euros). The average age of graduation at the Friulian university is about 27 years. These are therefore the salaries of people who have an average age of 32.

THE GENDER WAGE GAP

Looking at the data disaggregated by gender, the story changes. Those who have made a career in absolute fastest, after the doctors, are the men graduates in the “political-social and communication” area in Udine, who earn 1,955 euros per month. Many more women have graduated from these disciplines and are taking € 633 less.

This is the situation in which the wage gap is most evident. It is also bad for women graduates in architecture and civil engineering (they are about half of the graduates in the discipline, but they take 1,319 euros, that is 520 less than male colleagues).

The graduates in physical education are those who receive the lowest wages in absolute terms, they are few, and earn 876 euros net per month, 535 less than their male colleagues.

In the only subject area in which graduates are perfectly divided between men and women, the scientific area, women on average earn 1,391 euros, that is 346 less than their male colleagues.

Women earn more than men (208 euros) when they graduate in languages (figures in any case modest, 1,398 euros). However, this discipline sees almost only women graduates.

THE COMPARISON

The 2019 situation was worse in some respects (for example the unemployment rate of law graduates, which reached 12%, globally much higher than the unemployment rate of Italian graduates, 5.7%). This (or the other) could be an exceptional year. –
