Mother Faces Charges After Toddler Brings Gun to Daycare

Shanae Davis, a 39-year-old mother from West Palm Beach, Florida, is facing charges of child neglect and allowing a minor to obtain a firearm after her 2-year-old son brought a loaded gun to daycare. The shocking discovery was made by staff at a daycare in Riviera Beach when they found a 9mm Glock 43 pistol inside the child’s lunchbox.

According to police documents, Davis had recently started carrying the gun into her apartment for added security following a series of robberies in her apartment complex. The night before the incident, she placed the gun in her son’s lunchbox to bring it inside, forgetting to remove it the next morning.

The incident has left parents of other children at the daycare shaken and terrified. Stephenne Warembourg expressed her fear, emphasizing the impact such negligence can have on the safety of children in educational environments. Al Canscel echoed these sentiments, highlighting the importance of ensuring the safety of children in places meant to protect them.

Safety specialists and community members are stressing the importance of responsible gun ownership and ensuring firearms are securely stored away from children. Kimberly Worth emphasized the need for a specific plan for safely storing guns to prevent incidents like this from happening in the future.

West Palm Beach police spokesman Mike Jachels noted the seriousness of the situation, emphasizing that negligence with firearms can have tragic consequences. Fortunately, no one was injured in this case.

Despite the terrifying incident, the owner of the daycare has chosen not to press charges against Davis. However, the state prosecutor’s office has decided to pursue legal action. The community and authorities are reflecting on measures that can be taken to prevent similar incidents in the future and ensure the safety of children in educational settings.
