Tense evening, in the center of Turin, for the march against the G7 promoted by the Askatasuna social center and the student collectives, on the first day of the meeting of the Ministers of the Environment at the Reggia di Venaria.
The police first used shields to repel the demonstrators, then resorted to water cannons and tear gas, and finally also to some truncheons. The demonstrators, who wanted to head towards the hotels hosting the delegations and Palazzo Madama, venue of the gala evening, continued to move through the city center looking for openings, but the police cordons closed all possible access. From the demonstration, eggs, smoke bombs and some bottles were thrown several times at the police. The first hot moment a few tens of meters from the departure of the procession, from Palazzo Nuovo, the university building where militants from the social centers and student collectives had gathered in assembly.
The police immediately made the demonstrators retreat at the entrance to Via Po. The procession then regrouped and headed towards other areas of the center in an attempt to get as close as possible to the cordoned off areas, where other moments of tension occurred. Near the Massimo cinema, some antagonists threw tables on an outdoor area and were also made to retreat with a few truncheons. In the afternoon it was the Extinction Rebellion activists who took center stage by unexpectedly climbing onto the roof of a building in Piazza Carlo Emanuele II, home to the biology faculty, from where they displayed a banner with the words ‘The king is nake, G7 is a scam’ (The king is naked, the G7 is a joke’.). After the latest tensions with the de-escalation charge in via Verdi, the anti-G7 protesters moved in front of Palazzo Nuovo, in Turin, and the situation returned to calm. Fifty people were identified by Digos: among them, according to investigators, there were also the militants and leaders of the Askatasuna social center who actively participated in the riots. Complaints will be filed against them for damage, aggravated violence against a public official and damage and throwing of objects.
“Solidarity with the police forces who are currently suffering violent attacks from a group of demonstrators in Turin”, says minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin. He adds: “I appeal to everyone: every contribution to the discussion is precious as long as it is carried out in a constructive and peaceful way. The G7 is preparing to adopt a historic decision on stopping the use of coal. It is the demonstration of the concrete commitment of our countries in combating climate change and protecting the environment”.

To address the “challenges of energy security, climate change and environmental protection – added the minister – there are three priorities: concreteness, cooperation in particular with Africa, a pragmatic and non-ideological approach according to the principle of neutrality technological”. The minister greeted all the delegations present and wanted to thank “the institutions and citizens of the municipality of Venaria, the city of Turin and the Piedmont Region for their extraordinary hospitality and collaboration”.
