US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin told his Israeli counterpart, Yoav Gallant, on Tuesday, that the civilian death toll in Gaza is “very high,” stressing that alternatives to a major Israeli military operation in the southern Gaza Strip are being explored.

A separate Israeli delegation was scheduled to visit Washington to discuss American concerns about Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s plans to launch an attack on the southern city of Rafah, where most Gazans have taken refuge.

But Israel canceled the visit after the United States abstained from voting on Monday during a session in which, in the absence of an American veto, a draft UN Security Council resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza was approved.

Austin said at the beginning of his meeting with Gallant, “In Gaza today, the number of civilian casualties is very high and the amount of humanitarian aid is very low,” adding that the two ministers will discuss alternatives to targeting the Hamas movement in Rafah.
