Generation Z Struggles with Happiness, but Research Reveals the Key
A recent survey conducted by Gallup in collaboration with the Walton Foundation has revealed that Generation Z is facing more challenges in finding happiness compared to previous generations. The survey collected data from over 2,000 Americans within the age range of 12 to 26, aiming to understand the factors that influence the happiness levels of this generation.
According to the survey author, Zach Hrynowski, a senior researcher at Gallup, about 75% of those surveyed reported being somewhat happy. However, the number decreases significantly as individuals in Generation Z transition into adulthood. Hrynowski noted that factors such as lack of time for relaxation and sleep on weekends, as well as a sense of purpose, strongly correlated with the happiness levels of Generation Z.
The feeling of waking up each day with a sense of purpose and importance in one’s work or school life emerged as a key predictor of happiness for Generation Z. This indicates that young people prioritize making a difference and feeling that their actions matter over material success or accolades.
Clinical psychologist Dr. Chloe Carmichael emphasized that happiness is not solely about pursuing positive emotions but rather about having a sense of purpose and understanding that challenges are part of the journey towards it. Dr. Broderick Sawyer, another psychologist, added that pursuing activities aligned with one’s sense of self can bring a sense of purpose, even if directly pursuing one’s purpose is not immediately feasible.
Apart from focusing on purpose, health was identified as a crucial element in promoting happiness among Generation Z. Dr. Rachel Salas, a professor of neurology, emphasized the importance of quality sleep for mood regulation and overall well-being. She recommended establishing healthy sleep habits by disconnecting from electronic devices before bedtime and maintaining a consistent sleep schedule.
In conclusion, the research suggests that prioritizing purpose, health, and self-care can significantly impact the happiness levels of Generation Z. By focusing on meaningful pursuits, adequate rest, and overall well-being, young people can enhance their happiness and overall satisfaction with life.
