The Chocoano lawyer Gerson Chaverra Castro was named president of the Supreme Court of Justice today

Gerson Chaverra Castro has had a brilliant and transparent career in the judicial branch.

He is a native of Querá, a district of the municipality of Bajo Baudó, a lawyer from the Autonomous University of Colombia, a master’s degree in Criminal and Criminological Sciences from the Externado University of Colombia, and a specialist in Criminal Law and Criminology from the University of Medellín.

He also has a specialization in Criminal Procedural Law, Constitutional Law and Administrative Law from the Universidad del Rosario.

He has 29 years of experience in the Judicial Branch. He worked in Chocó for twelve years, in municipalities such as Riosucio, Tadó, Quibdó, Bahía Solano and Istmina. In those towns, Chaverra held positions as promiscuous municipal judge, municipal criminal judge, promiscuous circuit judge, criminal circuit judge and specialized circuit criminal judge.

Between 2004 and 2007 he was a criminal judge of Bogotá and then, through merit-based competition, he was part of the Single Chamber of the Superior Court of Quibdó. Years later he was appointed to the Superior Court of Bogotá, of which he was president.

In February 2020, Chaverra Castro was elected as a member of the Supreme Court of Justice.

Last year, Judge Chaverra Castro was the speaker of a historic determination that convicted a young man for bullying and harassment against one of his classmates.
