TRIESTE. It was supposed to be a fishing trip looking for tuna. Instead, the fishing line thrown into the depths of the Gulf of Trieste by the fisherman Tommaso Sulle caught something unexpected.
“We were about seven miles from Miramare, we were intent on fishing when we realized that we had bitten a thresher shark – said Sulle -. About fifteen minutes of fighting followed, until the thread broke. We weren’t able to catch him, but even if we did, we would have released him immediately. “
Recognizing the animal was not complicated: “We immediately understood what we had come across because, like all thresher sharks, it was heavy, it remained in the background and dragging it to the surface was difficult – added Sulle, who immortalized the moment with the his smartphone -. I’ve never had anything to do with a thresher shark before. ‘
A first sighting was reported last week. Experts confirm that the case is curious because the thresher shark, despite being an endemic animal in the Mare Nostrum, has been the victim of decades of intensive fishing, which has made it a rare animal.
It is a species that is not dangerous at all for humans, present in the Mediterranean and which can also make its appearance in the waters of the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian.
