Government ordered maximum daily thermoelectric capacity to face the El Niño phenomenon

The Government, through the Minister of Mines and Energy, Andrés Camacho, has announced measures to address the energy crisis caused by the El Niño phenomenon.

In response to the critical energy conditions derived from the drought associated with the El Niño phenomenon, the Ministry of Mines and Energy has ordered Colombian thermoelectric plants to operate at maximum thermoelectric generation capacity every day of the week.

This decision is based on the recommendations issued by the National Dispatch Center (CND), which indicate a deficit in energy contributions during the last seven days, representing an average of 42% below the historical average for April, as reported on April 12, 2024.

Minister Camacho has established that the Minimum Daily Thermal Generation Reference, expressed in GWh (gigawatt hours), will be the maximum dispatchable every day of the weekfrom Monday to Sunday, as a temporary measure to address adverse energy conditions.

The National Government’s energy mining team is meeting to evaluate new provisions and decisions that will mitigate the impact of the climate crisis during the El Niño phenomenon. It is expected that these actions will contribute to guaranteeing the electricity supply in the country and protecting the population from the adverse effects of the prolonged drought.

“The objective of the measure is to put the thermoelectric generation park at its maximum capacity, in order to supply the demand for energy conditions due to the El Niño phenomenon, characterized by drought,” the Government reiterated.
