Palestinian Hamas fighters are not safe from Israel anywhere in Gaza, not even in the last areas where no Israeli troops have yet been deployed. The Israeli Ministry of Defense warned about this on Monday.

“Any terrorist who hides in Rafah should know that he will end up like those in Khan Younis and Gaza City,” Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said at a news conference in Tel Aviv. He was referring to the fact that thousands of Hamas fighters have been killed in those two cities. “More than half of Hamas terrorists are dead or seriously injured,” it said.

Gallant also recently reported for the first time a possible army advance on Rafah. In that city, where about 200,000 people lived before the war, about a million Palestinians have currently sought refuge. Rafah is also on the border with Egypt, causing Cairo to fear that military operations there could lead to a rush of desperate Palestinians to Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula.
