Hanau investigative committee: SPD politician resigns as chairman

The Hessian SPD politician Marius Weiß resigned on Tuesday as chairman of the committee of inquiry into the racist attack in Hanau. The deputy leader of the SPD parliamentary group in the state parliament justified this in a letter available to the Evangelical Press Service (epd) with an ongoing investigation by the Wiesbaden public prosecutor’s office on suspicion of forgery. According to media reports, Weiss’s wife used a fake parking sticker from Parliament.

“I would like to apologize to everyone whose expectations I have not lived up to with my misconduct,” the letter said. “I am infinitely sorry for this mistake, because worse than the legal accusation is that I betrayed the trust of people, inside and outside my party,” writes Weiß.

Kaweh Mansoori, deputy chairman of the SPD in Hesse, said on Tuesday that Weiß had signaled to the public prosecutor that he was ready for an amicable termination of the proceedings. This also emerges from the letter from the MP.

On February 19, 2020, a 43-year-old German shot nine people with an immigrant background and injured others in Hanau. He then shot his mother and took his own life.
