Harvest 2021, estimated 7% decline in Valle d’Aosta

by admin

According to the report by Assoenologi, Ismea and Uiv, the weather situation will have an important impact on production

Weather anomalies will affect the results of the harvest again this year. In Valle d’Aosta, as in the rest of Italy, the climatic trend had a negative impact on the 2021 harvest.

The “made in VdA” production this year is estimated at 18 thousand hectoliters according to the forecasts of Assoenologi, Unione Italiani Vini and Ismea, with a decrease of 7% compared to 2020. An even greater decline is expected in the other regions of the North West : Piedmont and Lombardy will lose, in order, 10 and 20% of production compared to last year.

For the Aosta Valley ā€œit was an anomalous year from many points of view – explains the report -, with delayed vegetative start and bud break due to low temperatures (but there was no frost damage). Spring and early summer were very rainy, with temperatures below average. The initial delay, which can be estimated in just under two weeks, is now estimated at 7-8 days, as there have been no slowdowns from peaks in high temperatures Ā». The report also mentions the Ā«presence of particularly virulent downy mildew, powdery mildew in the average. There is an incidence of hail, a rare event in the valley, on the lower areas Ā».

In Italy, the 2021 harvest will be characterized by a 9% loss of the harvest. Only two regions will remember this vintage in a positive way: Campania and Sicily should increase the harvest by 5 and 9% respectively.
