He left his quadriplegic son under the sun for hours, causing his death. This is the hypothesis of the prosecutor of Caltagirone, in the Catania area, to explain the death of a 14-year-old boy and order the arrest of his mother, a 45-year-old Romanian woman. According to the prosecutor, “the suspect, as a parent, abandoned her 14-year-old son, of whom she had exclusive custody (the father was in fact deceased), a person unable to provide for herself due to illness of mind and body, as suffering from spastic tetraparesis and severe mental retardation; conduct presumably consisted in leaving the minor to prolonged exposure to sunlight for a considerable period of time, from which death ensued ».
According to the reconstruction of the carabinieri of Grammichele, the municipality on whose outskirts the boy lived with his mother, the woman asked for help at least 36 hours after the death of her son, whose body the military found in his bed, in a room with the air conditioner turned on.
The methods of finding the body, and the words of the mother to justify the incident, made the investigators suspicious and an autopsy was ordered on the body, at the end of which the coroner established that the boy’s death would have been caused precisely from the prolonged exposure to the sun, which probably occurred around the day of August 15th, with temperatures that in those days in Sicily were very high.
The woman, who allegedly uses alcohol, had sole custody of the boy since his father died. The contradictions into which she fell during the investigations led the prosecutor to place her in custody for aggravated neglect of a minor, also contesting the recidivism of the crime because when her husband was still alive, the two parents were reported for another episode of abandonment of the boy.
In the detention order, the Caltagirone prosecutor underlines “the versions of the conflicting facts provided by the woman, starting from the call to 112 and then made during the investigation by the investigators; the various attempts of the same to escape (intent, however, revealed to the same soldiers on the occasion of the intervention), well aware of the risks to which it was exposed; the results of the summary information acquired during the activities carried out “.
