Among the more than 400 exclusive places, witnesses of art and history over the centuries, eight are in the province of Turin. Among these, the castle of Barone and villa Malfatti in San Giorgio Canavese, which participates for the first time, which can be visited for free, in an immersion in beauty that still makes our country unique in the world.

SAN GIORGIO CANAVESE. IThe largest widespread museum in Italy reopens its doors on Sunday 22 May on the occasion of the twelfth National Day of ADSI, the Italian Historic Houses Association.

Among the more than 400 exclusive places, witnesses of art and history over the centuries, eight are in the province of Turin. These include the castle of Barone and villa Malfatti in San Giorgio Canavese, which participates for the first time, which can be visited for free, in an immersion in beauty that still makes our country unique in the world.

Nearby locations such as Santena and Pavarolo, Bricherasio, Piossasco and Virle, San Giorgio Canavese and Barone Canavese invite the public to outline personal mini-tours which, within a few kilometers, include several properties, to be visited in combination with other locations and attractions or to discover typical products, in many cases grown in the agricultural dependencies of some historic residences.

The Barone castle, located in the heart of the characteristic hilltop village, in via canonico Frola, is the most significant Baroque architecture in the Canavese area, designed by one of Juvarra’s collaborators for the construction of the Stupinigi hunting lodge.

Of particular interest is the internal elliptical staircase and the wax decorations in one of the central rooms. It will be possible to visit the large halls on the ground floor of the castle, the elliptical staircase and the park in front. To facilitate the arrival of visitors, the Municipality has set up an additional parking space at the entrance of the town – Villa Malfatti is a stately building, built in the 19th century for the opera singer Teresa Belloc, a great interpreter of Rossinian roles, who for twenty years sang at the La Scala Theater in Milan. And the Municipality has named the recently renovated municipal theater to her.

The park and the ground floor of the villa, former location for many costume films, can be visited free of charge and by online booking at www.adsi.it/giornatanazionale, with the owner’s accompaniment, from 10 to 13 and from 14.30 to 17.30.

The virtual network outlined by the historic ADSI buildings is a social, cultural and economic heritage that the owners undertake every day to preserve and enhance, a true museum spread throughout the peninsula, which handed down Italian values and traditions and which before the pandemic was able to welcome 45 million visitors a year.

But it is also a pivotal heritage of a circular economy for the villages in which the residences are located and of which over time they have been an element of identity and reference. 54% of the properties owned by ADSI members are located in municipalities with a population of less than 20,000 inhabitants and, in 29% of cases, under 5,000 residents.

The induced activity of historic houses has a positive impact on the artisan (in particular restoration), tourism (catering, reception, visits to buildings, conferences, organization of events) and agricultural sectors. This year the photo contest is also back in collaboration with Photolux aimed at Instagram users. –
