Sint-Martens-Latem –

Human remains were found behind a house in Sint-Martens-Latem on Saturday. The court suspects that it concerns a woman who was reported missing thirty years ago.

The remains were found during excavation work for a renovation behind a house in Kerkstraat in Latem. Many details about who or how the remains were found are not known. Police and the public prosecutor arrived on the scene and closed off the street for several hours.

There are indications that it concerns a lady, Annie De Poortere, who disappeared in 1994. At the time of the disappearance she was 48 years old. The investigating judge was requisitioned, the investigation is being conducted intensively into all possible avenues. In the meantime, the woman’s relatives and family have been informed.

DNA research must now determine whether it is actually the woman in question. It is now being checked whether the woman’s DNA has been included in the police database, otherwise the family will have to check whether it is indeed the woman’s remains. At the time it was suggested that the woman might have moved to Spain, but the public prosecutor’s office cannot confirm that.
