India’s Defense Research and Development Organization successfully tested a supersonic missile-assisted torpedo launching system (SMART) on Wednesday, according to the country’s Ministry of Defence.
According to the Ministry of Defence, SMART is a new generation missile-based light torpedo launching system, designed and developed to “enhance the Indian Navy’s anti-submarine warfare capability well beyond the conventional range of light torpedoes”.
The system was tested at 8:30 a.m. local time from an island off the coast of Odisha in eastern India. The Ministry’s publication states that the system carries an advanced light torpedo as a payload along with a parachute-based release system.
“The development of the system will further increase the strength of our Navy,” said Indian Defense Minister Rajnath Singh, commenting on the test.
In mid-April, India also successfully tested a long-range subsonic cruise missile with its own technology at the Chandipur integrated test range. With RT
