The International Consultative Committee on Biosphere Reserves (CCIRB) issued a favorable opinion for the declaration of the Darién North Chocoan biosphere reserve
“It will become the second biosphere reserve in the Chocó territory and will be included in the world network of biosphere reserves.”
After the Ministry of Environment and Development sent the documentation on the nomination for the declaration of the “Darién Norte Chocoano Biosphere Reserve” in 2023, prepared jointly with Codechocó, Minambiente was notified by UNESCO about the concept. favorable approval from the International Consultative Committee on Biosphere Reserves (CCIRB).
In the document they argued that one of the satisfactory points of the proposal is the articulated work that has been carried out with the ethnic communities of the municipalities of Acandí and Unguía, the territorial entities, representatives of productive sectors and institutions evidenced in the joint management proposal , which through this governance structure will implement actions that guarantee the social and environmental development of the area to be declared a Biosphere Reserve.
Arnold Rincón López, general director of Codechocó, assured that the ecosystems of the Darién subregion are part of the environmental heritage of the territory, which generates great interest at an international level, which is why the nomination as a Biosphere Reserve will make the territory visible, favors the articulation, the intervening management, the cooperation processes, which in turn contribute to sustainable economic development and protection of its cultural diversity.
The official announcement of the declaration is expected to take place at the end of the second half of the year, during the 36th report session of the International Council for the Coordination of the Program on Man and the Biosphere.
