Italy –

Matteo Di Pietro, the Italian YouTuber who killed a five-year-old child last summer, has been sentenced to four years and four months in prison. However, he will not go to prison, because he has already served part of that sentence in home detention. The case is causing quite a stir in Italy.

On June 14, Di Pietro borrowed a Lamborghini to make videos with. For a ‘challenge’, the Italian YouTuber reached speeds of 120 kilometers per hour, while the road in question has a speed limit of only 50 kilometers per hour. During his reckless drive, he collided with another car. In that car were a mother with her son and daughter. The son did not survive the accident, the mother and daughter were injured.

Not to jail

The judge ordered a prison sentence of four years and four months. But Di Pietro will not have to serve it in jail, because he has already spent eight months of that sentence in house arrest. Italian law states that someone only has to go to jail if they have been sentenced to four years or more in prison. All sentences of less than four years can be served in home detention. This means he can also serve his remaining sentence of three years and eight months in home detention.

Outrage in Italy

Deputy Prime Minister of Italy Matteo Salvini already announced on social media that he did not agree with the punishment. He is critical of the legal system in his country. “Four years for murdering a five-year-old child? Reform of the justice system is needed more than ever,” Salvini said on social media. The Association of Victims of Traffic Accidents also speaks of a “ridiculous punishment”.

According to Di Pietro’s lawyer, the sentence is in line with the objectives of the Italian legal system, which, according to him, is all about re-education and resocialization. Di Pietro himself acknowledged his guilt and showed remorse to the family of the deceased child. He also expressed his desire to participate in road safety projects in the future.
