Key data in hearing of alias ‘Otoniel’ before the JEP

The Attorney General’s Office obtained new data in cases related to the well-known “False Positives”, crimes against former militants of the Patriotic Union (UP) and the links between State agents and paramilitary groups.

In macro cases 03, 04 and 06, new data has been collected and key versions and statements have been corroborated.

The first attorney delegated to the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), Alonso Pio Fernández Angarita, participated in a reserved hearing with the former paramilitary alias ‘Otoniel’, held in the maximum security prison ADX Florence, Colorado, United States. During this session, the witness provided crucial information, including names of senior officials of the Public Force and other public officials, which will allow the JEP to delve deeper into the search for the truth and identify those responsible and main participants in the aforementioned crimes.

The revelations of ‘Otoniel’ have also served to confirm and expand previously delivered versions in hearings prior to his extradition. With this new testimony in hand, the Attorney General’s Office will carry out a comparative analysis with the statements of other witnesses and victims, preparing to express their position during the procedural stage. This analysis will seek to evaluate the commitment and veracity of those appearing, especially with regard to obtaining benefits from transitional justice.

This advance in research promises to shed light on some of the darkest episodes in Colombia’s history, offering hope for justice and reparation for the victims and their families.
