An informed source revealed that the Ministry of Trade and Industry in Sanaa set the prices of legumes based on net weight.

The source stated to Limnat that in the year 2023, the Ministry set the price of legumes based on the net weight of 400 grams, leaving out the filtered weight.

The source explained that the filtered weight is the number of beans, fava beans, or peas. Pointing out that legume products differ in terms of filtered weight, because some have a filtered weight of 260 grams, others 230 grams, some 280 grams, and 300 grams.

The source pointed out that setting the price based on the net weight allowed manipulation of the filtered weight, while the price remained the same for any product.

The source indicated that this serves new importers of legumes that Yemeni markets are full of, most of which have a filtered weight of less than 400 grams.

The source pointed out that the price of legumes is supposed to be according to the filtered weight, which depends on the number of beans, and not the pure weight, which depends on the weight of what the box contains.

Setting the price of legumes based on net weight is a consumer trick aimed at supporting emergency traders by achieving better profits at the expense of the local product.
