They are all strong supporters of YouTuber ‘Pil Seung-ju’, who records Lou Gehrig’s disease with 50,000 subscribers. He recently started editing videos using an ‘eye mouse’ that recognizes eye movements using a sensor.
Since I am unable to film myself due to my mobility issues, I use videos filmed by people around me as material. These are all videos and photos sent by his friends, including a drone video of Gwangalli, Busan, taken on New Year’s Day on the 1st, and a sunrise video taken in Namhae and Jinju, Gyeongnam.
The only thing in his body that can move at will are his eyes. So, we interact with the world through online activities. They say they spend their time lying in bed watching dramas on various online video services (OTT), reading comments on YouTube, reading mystery novels, and doing grocery shopping.
Before suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease, Pil Seung-ju received notification of his acceptance to become a national civil servant in 2017 (then 24 years old) and lived a lively life like any other person in his 20s. Then one day in early 2019, while working out, she felt an inexplicable feeling of weakness in her left leg. She felt her left leg sinking into the sand after only three minutes of walking. She went to an orthopedic and disc specialist hospital, but the results were the same, ‘no abnormality’.
The initial characteristic of Lou Gehrig’s disease that Pil Seung-ju experienced was muscle tremors. No matter how much I hit her leg, it felt like someone was living deep inside. Although her cause was unknown, it was clear that something was wrong with her body, so she had to do whatever it took. So she was admitted to a local university hospital near her home and began receiving her steroid injections.
However, the uncomfortable leg showed no signs of getting better, and an ominous feeling of unknown origin came over me. The more she did, the more she limped on one leg and she gritted her teeth and played. At the time, his condition developed slowly and he was able to live his life.
In August 2021, he became unable to walk on his own without someone’s support or a cane. In December of that year, he went to work while supporting his body with a cane umbrella, and eventually had to choose to resign. Has it been 8 months since then? Spring has arrived in April, beautifully colored and flawless like his smile in the video. As he lost 10kg of weight, his right thumb muscle also developed abnormalities. In the fall, a thin, hoarse voice appeared. Soon, it became difficult for him to even breathe, so he had to wear a breathing machine. However, he had difficulty breathing while sleeping, so he decided to have a tracheotomy.
The decision wasn’t easy. Many people are reluctant to undergo a tracheotomy, a procedure that involves making a hole in the neck and inserting a tube directly into the airway, for fear of never being able to speak again. Because of this, I spent 10 days in tears saying that I would not cut my trachea.
In this way, Pil Seung-ju even captured the image of himself thinking that he was not pretty, and his honest record moved many people. It served as an opportunity to strengthen her solidarity with people suffering from the same disease. In fact, YouTubers ‘Pirupero’ and ‘Hey Jiwon’, who suffer from Lou Gehrig’s disease, are seen leaving comments and communicating with each other on the video.
It is also helpful for those who are not physically uncomfortable. One netizen said, ‘I am overcome with depression and am reflecting on how pessimistic I looked at my life. Looking back, I don’t think I have ever lived life as diligently as Seungju. He left a comment saying, “This year, I will try my best to live without shame.”
Pil Seung-ju has published a total of 17 recorded contents so far. Due to physical discomfort, video uploads tend to be irregular, and subscribers often get worried if there is no news for a while. However, she soon shared her current status through the YouTube community, saying, “I’ve been thinking about ways to get sick better these days. I’ll do my best to get sick well so I don’t fall into a swamp.”

In a YouTube community post posted two months ago, he said, “Originally, I edited videos with my toes, but now I use an eye mouse that reads eye movements. My eyes hurt a lot because I have to stare at each letter as I type, but I can’t write like this. “I can do it. Editing with an eye mouse is still daunting, but I will keep taking on the challenge,” he said, expressing his will to consistently record his daily life and communicate with the world.
