Midwives without vaccination, the deputy mayor of Tolmezzo: right to suspend them

by admin

TOLMEZZO. The news of 5 out of 12 midwives at the Tolmezzo hospital not yet vaccinated is arousing indignation in the city, in Carnia and in Friuli, data that are putting the obstetrics ward in crisis.

“Doctors and nurses from other hospitals have also contacted me – says the deputy mayor, Fabiola De Martino -, telling me that they are astonished and that it is right that this staff should be suspended. Already in general, health personnel who do not want to get vaccinated screeches, even more than midwives, who are in contact with newborns. The doctor should protect you. To certain posts on social media that ask to defend obstetrics, I reply that obstetrics must protect those who work there first.

There is no risk of suppression, explains De Martino – for the birth point, but whoever should defend that birth point is putting it in crisis. I am amazed and with me many because we are talking, as well as health professionals, of those who give birth to children and live one of the most delicate moments in a woman’s life: childbirth.

You cannot put him in crisis: the woman is fragile and the newborn is fragile, who does not have its own immune system. No one has ever had any kind of doubt about keeping the birth point because – explains De Martino – it is an essential service and concerns a mountain area like ours.

It is absurd that whoever is the operator of that service and should keep it as a flagship makes an alarm post that does not explain and is not understood, it seems that who knows what happens and then it turns out that it is precisely the midwives to bring him to his knees.

The Healthcare Company will have to manage and cover the service in some way, however, these operators who put the structure, the service and the mothers in this situation must take on all the responsibilities of the disservice they are creating.

Moreover, they should realize that by behaving in this way they undermine the trust of those who go to their ward and to the hospital ».

For the commissioner, it is one thing to put the patch because there is no staff and one thing is to work with half the staff who are not vaccinated. To facilitate their immunization, vaccine reservations were open from December 27th.

“If there are among these midwives people who really cannot get vaccinated, nothing to say – De Martino insists, indeed they must be protected, but then they have the exemption certified by the doctor. I think I understand this is not the case when it comes to suspension ».
