Fellbach. In Baden-Württemberg, as many foreigners will have received German citizenship in 2023 as last time more than 20 years ago. A total of 22,745 people were naturalized, as the State Statistical Office announced on Wednesday. That is 8.5 percent more than the year before and more than ever since 2002.

The proportion of naturalized adult men (42.3 percent) was greater than that of women (35.8 percent) last year, and more than one in five new citizens (21.8 percent) were younger than 18 years old. On average, naturalized people are significantly younger than the general population in Germany: 30.7 years old for some, 43.8 years old for others.

The German passport was mainly given to people from Syria (6,963), Iraq (1,107) and Afghanistan (440). “This is probably due to the fact that, following the strong immigration from these countries in recent years, a growing group of people now meets the requirements for naturalization,” suspects the State Statistical Office. Foreigners can be naturalized after eight years or after six years “if special integration achievements are available”.

Anyone who wants to be naturalized in Germany – i.e. become a German – must meet a number of requirements. In addition to a permanent residence permit and a minimum stay, this also includes sufficient knowledge of German, the absence of a criminal record and, as a rule, completing a naturalization test in which 17 of 33 questions about Germany’s society and history must be answered correctly. dpa
