More than 3,500 teachers and other education staff will be at Antwerp’s Groenplaats on Tuesday afternoon. This is evident from a count by the Christian Education Center (COC). ‘Only’ 2,000 people were expected. The unions speak of a “great success”.
Around 10 am the crowd left Antwerp’s Operaplein towards Theaterplein. The parade stopped at the Groenplaats just before noon, there was barely enough room for everyone. Education staff are arguing against what they call the “proposed downsizing” of the statute, as described in the report of the Committee of Wise Men.
An important requirement of the unions is that lateral entrants receive proper training. After all, the committee proposed to drop the certificates of competence. The lack of guarantees with the proposed 38-hour week also causes frustration.
After noon, the Agency for Educational Services should have an idea of the impact of the demonstration on the schools themselves.
