The New York subway system has seen a rise in serious crimes despite the increase in police presence. A tragic incident occurred at the 125th Street station in East Harlem, Northern Manhattan, where a man was pushed onto the subway tracks and lost his life.
The aggressor, identified as Carlton McPherson, was arrested at the scene and it was revealed that he has a history of mental health issues. This incident comes just hours after the deployment of 800 new police officers to the subway network, in addition to the 750 National Guard troops already stationed there.
While overall crime in the subway has decreased, serious crimes such as stabbings and shootings have increased by up to 50% since January compared to the same time last year. Recent incidents include a fight that escalated into a shooting and a woman losing both legs after being pushed onto the tracks by her partner.
These violent events highlight the need for increased security measures in the New York subway to ensure the safety of its passengers.Authorities are working to address these concerns and prevent further tragedies in the future.
