Nikki Haley, Trump’s only rival, withdraws from the Republican primaries in the United States

Former US ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley will end her campaign in the Republican primaries this Wednesday, making former president Donald Trump the only candidate from his party for the November presidential elections, according to US media reports.

Haley is expected to announce her decision in a speech on Wednesday, March 6, in Charleston, South Carolina, the state of which she was governor. The Wall Street Journal and CNN have reported that she will withdraw her candidacy.

Despite resisting pressure to resign in recent weeks and pledging not to retire after ‘Super Tuesday’, Haley’s failure on this key day has led to her decision to end her campaign. She plans to formally step back from the race in a matter of hours, according to major American media outlets.

The retired candidate has made history as the first woman to win a Republican Party primary and gain national prominence in the political arena. While this achievement may work in her favor in future electoral races, it seems unlikely that she will be part of Trump’s hypothetical cabinet, considering the open disagreements between the two.

Joe Biden had previously considered Haley’s battle lost, as she embodies the moderate wing of the Republican Party and aimed to restore “normality” amid “Trump’s chaos”. However, her defeat on Super Tuesday and subsequent decision to withdraw from the race have left Trump as the sole contender for the Republican nomination.

On Super Tuesday, both President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump swept the primary elections in their respective parties. Trump emerged victorious in 14 out of 15 states, with only Nikki Haley in Vermont and Jason Palmer in American Samoa able to avoid a clean sweep.

Despite facing legal challenges and 91 felony charges, Trump continues to lead the polls and win primaries since January 15. His strong support among working-class, white, and rural voters has kept him as a formidable candidate in the upcoming elections.
