The Purge case is a new blow from the State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) for an alleged case of organized crime; As a result of this investigation, judges, a former legislator and several officials were arrested. This action leaves justice between said and with the presumption that it can be purchased with resources.
Circumstances
During the operation carried out in the early hours of Monday, March 4, 2024, seven judges were arrested, including the former president of the Court of Justice of Guayas, Fabiola Gallardo; the former assemblyman of the Social Christian Party (PSC), Pablo Muentes; and four more people.
The master in Criminal Law, Luis Alberto Villavicencio Quezada, indicated that Purga is a derivation of the main Metastasis case, which links a series of people for the crime of organized crime – and this last event is for the same action -, since The Prosecutor’s Office has considered, based on investigations carried out, that these people, including a former assembly member (a staunch enemy of Fernando Villavicencio), had irregular behavior.
“It is also linked to a series of judges of the Provincial Court of Justice of Guayas and the president of the entity herself, who in collusion committed a series of infractions. Now they have been charged so that they respond to justice and, above all, to Ecuadorian society—for the alarming cases of corruption in the country,” she said.
He added that, “the majority of the judges have been appointed by former President Rafael Correa, the same ones who were directed to certain people who had a relationship with the political organization he led, so they possibly did not have the academic level to be in office. ”.
Currently, justice is in doubt due to this action, but there are still good and upright judges in the country.
Meanwhile, Sandra Jiménez Cabrera, a practicing lawyer, said that Ecuador has to express deep gratitude to prosecutor Diana Salazar, because she is the architect of the decomposition of the mafia, drug trafficking and organized crime plots and of issues of manipulation of justice in the country.
“The Metastasis case is related to Correismo and the Purge affects the PSC, because in the new investigation there are characters from that organization. Fortunately, not only people who received orders are falling, but also the main heads or ‘big shots’, what the people always asked for,” he added.
Furthermore, the Purge case also demonstrates that they have always handled justice as they please, which is why judges, former assembly members, among others, are imprisoned.
For his part, constitutional lawyer Marcelo Soto Calderón mentioned that the work carried out by the Attorney General of the Nation is quite heroic, because since past Governments, true mafias have been established in Ecuador, and specifically in the Judicial Branch, that are established and institutionalized in the judicial sector, the Executive Function and without a doubt in the Legislative Function.
“It is regrettable that the rot and decomposition found in the Judicial Function has been further highlighted. It is urgent, in the next popular consultation, proposed by the President of the Republic, one of the questions, which establishes that there must be institutionalized in the Judicial Function, there are new constitutional judges, honest, with an impeccable judicial career and who can administer justice,” he added.
He indicated that, since the judges are susceptible to corruption, the State assigns them a salary of USD 4,300 for a first instance judge and USD 5,300 for a second instance judge, but even so they lend themselves to being part of the mafias; Thus, he highlighted, other networks will continue to appear in various institutions.
