In the past year, one in five young moped riders ended up at the doctor or in hospital due to a traffic accident. The Flemish Traffic Science Foundation (VSV) said this on Thursday, based on a large youth survey.

To better prepare people who want to obtain a driving license for a moped, speed pedelec and moped car for traffic, the VSV is launching the free learning platform mijnrijspraakAM.be.

The youth survey shows that mopeds are a vulnerable group in traffic. 4 percent of young people indicate that they go to school by moped. It is true that 21 percent indicate that they have been involved in an accident in the past year that resulted in a visit to the doctor or hospital.

Anyone who wants to drive a moped, speed pedelec or microcar must obtain the AM driving license if they do not have a B driving license. After all, some very specific rules apply to such vehicles that do not apply to other vehicles, such as their position on the road. “Sometimes they have to go on the cycle path and sometimes on the road,” says the VSV. Every year, around 4,000 people in Flanders obtain their AM driving license.

The learning platform that VSV is launching must prepare the target group as much as possible for that driver’s license. The platform is also intended for anyone who wants to refresh the rules. On the platform they can take a test exam for a moped, speed pedelec or moped car.
