Orange is confident that it can offer broadband internet with speeds of 1 gigabit per second to 95 percent of Belgian families. The telecom operator achieved that target six months earlier than planned, he announced on Thursday.

In the middle of last year, Orange completed the takeover of the Walloon cabler VOO. The company then announced an accelerated modernization of the VOO network in Wallonia and part of Brussels. This is a hybrid network with fiber optic cables up to the neighborhood cabinets and from there a classic coaxial cable to the houses. For access to Flanders, Orange concluded an agreement with Telenet last year, which in turn can count on VOO’s fixed network in the south.

Orange promised to offer broadband internet at speeds of 1 gigabit per second to 95 percent of all families by mid-2024. However, the operator already achieved that target at the end of December. Orange wants to reduce the remaining 5 percent to 2 to 3 percent by the end of 2025.

In addition, Orange continues to adhere to its goal of replacing two-thirds of its own network with full-fledged fiber optic to the front door by 2040. Orange CEO Xavier Pichon does not rule out that the operator will also use the fiber optic infrastructure of other players – such as rival Proximus.
