The Venezuelan government announced on Monday the reinforcement of its immunization system through new agreements with the Pan American Health Organization (OPS). These include the acquisition of vaccines against the human papillomavirus (HPV) and the pneumococcal bacterium.

The Vice President of Science and Technology, Gabriela Jiménez, informed that the Executive signed agreements with PAHO and the Alliance for Vaccination (GAVI) for the introduction of the HPV vaccine; the main cause of uterine cancer and one of the most frequent diseases in the country, according to authorities.

At the end of 2022, the government announced that it would begin to apply this vaccine in the second quarter of 2023, initially in the population between 9 and 12 years of age, although it has not explained when these doses will begin to be inoculated or how many were acquired.

Likewise, the documents signed today contemplate the reintroduction of the pneumococcal and rotavirus vaccines. Schemes that were previously in the national immunization program, but which were excluded in the last six-year term in the midst of the economic crisis; and the international sanctions imposed on the country.

“The authorities also agreed to follow up on the progress of the risk mitigation plan for polio; and the process of verifying the elimination of measles in the country,” the letter says. In addition, the communication indicates, an agreement to reinforce the distribution and storage systems of vaccines in Caracas and the 23 states of the country.

On September 15, the Health portfolio, PAHO and GAVI agreed on sustainable financing. This in order to reinforce the regular vaccination scheme for children in Venezuela.
