Palestine –

The British TV channel ITV News had just finished an interview in Khan Younis, Gaza Strip, when the Israeli army suddenly started shooting at a group of Palestinians. One of them was clearly holding a white flag, the international symbol of peace.

Five Palestinian men tried to reach two families in Khan Younis on Monday in the area that is considered a ‘safe zone’, but which is becoming increasingly dangerous due to the ongoing war. The video footage taken by ITV clearly shows that the five are doing everything they can to demonstrate that they are not dangerous. They hold their arms in the air, one man holds a white flag and keeps it in plain sight.

“My mother and my brother are there together with about 50 or 70 other displaced people. The Israelis came to us and told us to evacuate, but they did not let my brother go,” said a man wearing a black jacket and glasses. He keeps his hands in the air throughout the interview.

After a very short conversation, the cameraman can be seen holding his equipment down and walking away. But then, a few minutes later, he films the men again, this time from a few meters away. Very slowly they try to walk on, always careful so that they are not considered dangerous. And then the gunshots follow. The man with the black coat and glasses who previously told his story in front of the camera is affected. When some young people try to take him to safety, gunshots ring out again. The man later died from his injuries.

The Israeli military was shown the video footage, but said it was not aware of the incident, according to NBC News. The military also indicates that “the video has clearly been edited.” The Israeli army spokesman also declined to say whether any soldiers were in the area on Monday.

The video footage of the incident in Khan Younis raises questions about the so-called safe zones and how the Israeli army treats unarmed civilians.
