According to his lawyer, 71-year-old Ramon Fonseca died in a hospital; the cause of death was not reported.

The law firm was at the center of the scandal surrounding the so-called “Panama Papers”. In 2016, an international team of journalists evaluated millions of leaked documents from the law firm and revealed the names of celebrities, politicians and athletes. They are said to have concealed income from the tax authorities with the help of letterbox companies that the law firm had set up for them. Fonseca and his business partner Jürgen Mossack had to answer in court because of this. A verdict is still pending.
