Paraguay celebrates National Poncho Day with 60 lists

The aim of this celebration is to preserve, safeguard and keep alive the tradition of this Paraguayan craft, which is born in the city of Piribebuy, which also commemorates the 388th anniversary of its foundation.

Through Law 6587/2021, the National Day of the Para´i Poncho of 60 lists and its Weavers is celebrated in the country.

The town of Piribebuy has 126 registered artisans to date, 109 women and 17 men.

The Paraguayan Institute of Crafts, through its social networks and digital portal, paid tribute to the artisans of the city located in the department of Cordillera.

He mentioned that about 73 km from the capital of Paraguay, lies the heroic city of Piribebuy, known for its natural scenery, for the rich history of great heroes of the country and for hosting the laborious craftsmen who stand out in the making of the emblematic Poncho Para’i of 60 lists.

In a historical landmark for the Republic of Paraguay, the Poncho Para ́i of 60 Lists of the heroic city of Piribebuy was included last December 5, in the list of Intangible Cultural Heritage that demands urgent safeguarding measures by UNESCO . . . . This recognition marks a transcendental step towards the protection and preservation of the rich Guarani culture, symbolizing the identity of a plurilingual and multicultural country.

This historical event consolidated the cultural legacy of Paraguay and invites us to celebrate the diversity and richness of our identity. The international recognition of our beloved Poncho Para’i 60 Listas as universal heritage is more than an achievement; It is the echo of an ancestral tradition that rises before the world, carrying with it the history, passion and mastery of our artisans.
