Patient Sleiman suffered from type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure in addition to kidney disease. He also underwent human kidney transplant surgery at this hospital in 2018, but five years later, his condition worsened again last year and he had to undergo dialysis.
At the time, after the pig kidney transplant on March 16, doctors said they were even more convinced that dialysis was no longer necessary.
According to the Associated Press, pig kidneys have previously been temporarily transplanted to brain-dead patients as an experiment, but Suleiman is the first time a healthy living person has received a pig xenograft transplant.
