Petro asks ICC to issue arrest warrant against Netanyahu

The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has urged the International Criminal Court (ICC) to issue an arrest warrant against the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, after he stated that his country will continue the bombings in Gaza even without the support of the US, its main ally.

«Netanyahu will not stop the genocide. “Which implies an international arrest warrant from the Criminal Court,” wrote the Colombian president, at the same time that he requested that the United Nations Security Council begin to “consider the establishment of a peace force in the territory of Gaza.”

The day before, the Israeli prime minister published a video message on his X account in which he stated that Tel Aviv is determined to continue fighting Hamas in Gaza, and that it is not afraid of being left alone. Previously, Washington had threatened an eventual interruption of the supply of certain types of weapons to the Hebrew country if it launches a “major ground operation” against the Gazan city of Rafa.

Breaking of diplomatic relations

Israel has been a historical ally of Colombia, mainly in matters of security, trade, military cooperation and arms sales. However, last week the Colombian Government made the decision to break diplomatic relations with the Jewish country.

Since October 2023, Gustavo Petro has labeled Tel Aviv’s military operations against the Palestinian population in the Gaza Strip as genocide, which led to diplomatic tensions between the two governments. With RT
