Petro marks Colombia’s key priority for 2024

The Government of Colombia will work this 2024 to achieve the transition of illicit economies in “excluded” territories towards legal opportunities in the country, declared President Gustavo Petro this Wednesday during his speech at the World Economic Forum, held in the Swiss city of Davos.

“That transformation seems to me to be the key this year,” he said, stating that the illegal economy is the “product” of the failed global drug policy, “derived from the United States,” which has led to “a good part of » of Latin American countries to «a crisis in the very coherence of their society and their democracy».

According to the president, the illicit economy, for its part, derives from the problem of territorial inequality.

«Colombia is a country that is territorially fragmented into regions that are very diverse from each other. And part of that territory, of those regions, are regions that have been excluded for centuries,” he highlighted.

The solution to these issues will help resolve the two “fundamental” problems facing the country, which are violence and social inequality, Petro defended, adding that, although these problems cannot be resolved in one year, being “a long process”, the Government wants “this year to put the country on tracks of pacification and therefore equity that may be irreversible.” With RT
