“Possibly the busiest evening rush hour of the year”: 260 kilometers of traffic jam in Flanders

The evening rush hour may have peaked, but the misery on the road is not over immediately. This is what Peter Bruyninckx of the Flemish Traffic Center said on Wednesday evening. No record was broken, but it may well be the busiest evening rush hour of the year.

It is a classic: on the eve of the Ascension weekend there are many traffic jams on the Flemish highways. “People only have to take one day of leave and can take four consecutive days of holiday, which is appealing,” says spokesperson Peter Bruyninckx.

“The figures are impressive, at peak time there was at least 320 km of traffic jams, but we may not break a record. There is a lot of traffic, it is really busy. There have been a few incidents, but not exceptionally many, the traffic jams are entirely due to a huge crowd on the road.”

The traffic jams started in the morning, especially around Antwerp. During the evening rush hour there was also queuing around Brussels and Ghent, with many people driving towards the Belgian coast. At around 6:20 PM there were still more than 260 kilometers of traffic jams. “The traffic jams that have built up over the past few hours are very difficult to resolve. And the end is not yet in sight,” concludes Bruyninckx.
