Colombia is preparing for COP16, an international space that will define agendas, commitments and action frameworks to conserve biodiversity.

From October 21 to November 1, 2024, the sixteenth session of the COP16 Conference of the Parties will take place, making Colombia the key stage to discuss biodiversity conservation at a global level.

In this context, national initiatives such as Feeding Tomorrow They promote the free implementation of sustainable menus in public institutions and regional agreements at the national level.

This commitment brings the country closer to pioneering initiatives of the Netherlands25 world capitals and prestigious universities such as Cambridge, Yale y Stanfordwho lead efforts to protect biodiversity and combat the climate crisis through food.

Sustainable alternatives to feed Colombians

According to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), agriculture uses 83% of available agricultural land to produce meat, milk, eggs, as well as aquaculture farms. And the renowned Chattam House institution points out that the occupation of native forests generated by our current food system is the main threat to 86% of animal species in the world, destroying their natural habitats and increasing the risk of new zoonotic diseases.

According to the UN Environment Program (UNEP), biodiversity loss will continue to accelerate unless we change the way we produce food. Greater destruction of ecosystems and habitats puts at risk the ability to sustain human populations, which is why the transformation of the food system has taken on greater prominence, with commitments in the last COP28 and calls from the WHO to generate a healthier, diversified and plant-based diet.
