Protests against the AfD: People demonstrate in Duisburg and Düsseldorf – News

In Duisburg, more and more people have been gathering for protests since Saturday afternoon near the building where the AfD meets. A WDR reporter on site reported that many of the demonstrators, some of whom came from all over the Ruhr area, were angry and said it was high time for protests against the AfD. Members from all walks of life and all age groups are among the protesters, including representatives of trade unions and parties.

Families are also there. Parents told WDR that they had to think about the future of their children – and stand up against the AfD. One woman said: “The camel’s back has overflowed for me, we have to show our colors now!” Another told WDR: “Actually, many more people should be here and take a stand for democracy.” A pregnant woman emphasized: “I think it’s important to be here, it’s about our future.”

Many more demonstrators than expected

150 demonstrators were originally registered in Duisburg, but the number kept increasing. In the afternoon, the Duisburg police reported around 2,400 participants. A protest action is also taking place in front of the state parliament in Düsseldorf – calling for a ban on the AfD. Around 600 people gathered there in the afternoon.

The AfD’s plans have also caused consternation on social media. Many are calling for public resistance and protests against the AfD.
