Compulsory health treatment in psychiatry should not be considered as an inevitable measure and a serious analysis should consider the Tso one by one, because each story is different and unique, despite the mental laziness of the operators who tend to emphasize its continuity, immersed in a sort of lethargic routine.
Psychiatry shouldn’t work in an emergency and shouldn’t need to force anyone into treatment.
There are various types of psychiatric Tso and the most criticizable is that in the form of a threat, both towards people who are not hospitalized and towards those who are already in patients. “If you don’t take this medicine I’ll give you a Tso!” it is a phrase that has nothing to conciliate nor to seek a dialogue. And if there is no dialogue, there is no psychiatry. Especially if all the skills and possibilities are not brought into play.
It does not always work to claim the lack of personnel and / or facilities, it is not ethical or objective.
I personally worked 17 years in that context and I can show that it is not the numbers that distort the picture but the will and the skills.

The pandemic was not necessary to remind us of the essential importance of territorial, networked, dialoguing and open to all available approaches. If there is territory, there are no Tso’s and they are reduced to minimum admissions to the psychiatric ward.
The mental suffering unleashed by the wicked management of the pandemic, at all levels, will have repercussions over a very long time, unimaginable today.
It is a disgrace for the Aosta Valley, with its structural and human possibilities, to find itself with a psychiatry in less than excellent conditions. I remember that a huge number of people are institutionalized in structures that, in addition to marginalizing them from the social contexts of origin, stigmatize them in a totally biological anti-scientific vision (what is the point, among other things, to sedate people contextualized in self-styled structures with slow-release neuroleptic drugs “therapeutic”?).
I left Valdostan psychiatry for its unexceptionable closure to dialogue and criticism. The pandemic has been able to provide an assist for a further unexpected reburocratization in an authoritarian sauce.
