Public health emergency declared due to level 2 dengue outbreak in Neiva

In response to the worrying proliferation of the dengue-transmitting mosquito and the increase in cases in several communes of the city, municipal health authorities declared a public health emergency through decree 0191 of 2024.

This measure seeks to adopt an effective contingency plan to deal with the dengue outbreak in the municipality.

The communes most affected by the presence of the mosquito and the spread of the virus are 2, 6, 9 and 10.

Given this situation, a strategy is being implemented to community intervention in these areas, with the aim of reducing the formation of breeding sites for Aedes Aegypti and Aedes Albopictus, vectors responsible for the transmission of dengue.

According to the epidemiological report until epidemiological week number 7 of 2024, A total of 1871 cases of dengue have been recorded, between confirmed and probable. This figure is broken down in 1,417 cases of dengue without warning signs, 405 cases of dengue with warning signs and 49 cases of severe dengue, The early childhood and childhood population being the most affected.

The Secretary of Health of Neiva, Lilibeth Galván, highlighted the intensification of actions within the framework of the contingency plan to combat the dengue outbreak in the municipality. Strategies such as the 1-4-7 scheme are being implemented in the neighborhoods with the highest incidence of the disease, such as El Limonar, Las Palmas and Canaimaamong others.

One of the key actions to combat dengue is the elimination of mosquito breeding sites in homes. The community must commit to eliminating containers that can accumulate clean water, such as tires, vases, and other containers. In addition, it is recommended to clean tanks and pools with a brush and chlorine every five days to eliminate mosquito larvae.

The Secretary of Health also emphasized that fumigation is not the definitive solution to eliminate dengue, but rather a complementary measure to reduce the population of adult mosquitoes. The key is to eliminate breeding sites at home.
