While the recovery project of the former Bourbon prison of Santo Stefano continues under the guidance of Invitalia, with the full support of the Government, Commissioner Giovanni Macioce presented today in Rome the novelty of the ‘functional lot’ on Ventotene. In response to the provisions issued by the Environmental Impact Assessment Commission and the Services Conference, the effects of which significantly reduce the use of Santo Stefano, Macioce had presented the proposal in December 2023 to create a ‘functional lot’ to guarantee the seasonally adjusted operation of the future hub cultural.
The idea came to fruition with the proactive contribution of the State Property Agency which identified for this purpose a state-owned public area which coincides with what was once the prison citadel where the prisoners’ dormitories stood, built in the mid-1990s. 30 and demolished at the end of the 70s by the people of Ventotene themselves. The construction of the functional lot on Ventotene will be “very rapid” as Invitalia, the implementing body of the intervention, will entrust the design to the Consortium that won the design competition, as required by the specifications.
“The fame of Ventotene is linked to the Confinement because the idea of Europe was born here with the Manifesto of Spinelli, Rossi and Colorni, but nothing remained of the spaces where the political prisoners lived – said Macioce in the meeting with the Community of Ventotene at the Auditorium of the National Central Library of Rome – Today, “after a series of steps stimulated by me with the various administrations involved, I am able to officially give the news that the State Property Agency has granted for the construction of the lot the area where the Cameroni della Cittadella Confinaria once stood is functional and the functional lot will be built here in a memory recovery operation. The future building will be a support structure for the functioning of the future multicultural center of Santo Stefano, allowing its continuous and seasonal management”.
